Programma
Tijdens de zomerweek 2026 werk je aan typografie en beeld in druk. We onderzoeken hoe tekst, woorden, letters en vormen samen een verhalend geheel kunnen worden. Je werkt met het typografische materiaal uit de werkplaats, aangevuld met enkele meer experimentele technieken en andere materialen zoals lino, tape, karton en sjablonen.
Deze materialen gebruik je niet illustratief, maar als volwaardige elementen van je werkstuk. De tekst zetten en drukken doen we volgens de regels van de boekdrukkunst, voor de illustraties staat het experiment centraal. We laten je voorbeelden zien met kleine demonstraties zodat jezelf kunt kiezen wat er goed bij jouw tekst zou passen.
We besteden veel aandacht aan de relatie tussen de tekst en de typografische illustratie. Je zoekt naar samenhang in compositie, ritme en betekenis. Enkele weken voor de zomerweek lanceren we een inhoudelijk thema waarrond we gezamenlijk zullen werken, daarbij zal er volop ruimte zijn voor een persoonlijke invulling en benadering.
De week wordt begeleid door Ruud Huysmans en Niels Goovaerts. We begeleiden je stap voor stap, van idee en schets tot drukwerk, en we ondersteunen je zowel technisch als inhoudelijk. Er is ruimte om te proberen, bij te sturen en gaandeweg te verfijnen.
Zowel beginnende als meer ervaren letterzetters zijn welkom tijdens deze vijfdaagse zomerweek. Op basis van je ervaring maak je kennis met de kunst van het letterzetten en boekdrukken, of ga je slag met fijnere details die je graag zou willen leren.
Aan het eind van de zomerweek ga je naar huis met een aantal exemplaren van je eigen drukwerk en dat van de andere deelnemers.
Lunches
We verzorgen je goed tijdens de week met heerlijke vegetarische lunches en allerlei lekkers. Met de deelnemers die dat wensen, organiseren we het avondmaal kostendelend. Deelnemers die kamperen, zorgen voor hun eigen ontbijt. Er is een koelkast waar je eten kan bewaren en een supermarkt vlakbij.
Kamperen
Tijdens de zomerweek is kamperen mogelijk in de tuin. Breng dan je eigen tent mee. Kamperen kost 10,00 euro/nacht. Er is sanitair en douchen kan in huis.

Ruud Huysmans is grafisch vormgever en boekdrukker met een interesse in alle vormen van typografie. Nadat hij samen met een collega begonnen is met letterpress drukwerk onder de naam Nieuwe Hoogte in Rotterdam werkt hij sinds enige jaren onder eigen naam in een werkplaats in het Brabantse Heerle (Nederland).
Als drukker heeft hij een grote voorkeur voor experimenten en technologie. In zijn werkplaats verkent hij de grenzen van design en tekst met analoge methoden om zo tot nieuwe oplossingen te komen in zijn werk. Het proces staat hierbij centraal: alles in twijfel trekken en onderzoeken wat mogelijk zou kunnen zijn. Bij zijn boekdruk experimenten zijn kennis van materiaal, theorie en geschiedenis essentieel.

Programme
During the summer week in 2026, you will work on typography and images in print. We will explore how text, words, letters and shapes can come together to form a narrative whole. You will work with the typographic materials from the workshop, supplemented with some more experimental techniques and other materials such as lino, tape, cardboard and stencils.
You will not use these materials illustratively, but as fully-fledged elements of your work. We will typeset and print according to the rules of letterpress printing, while experimentation will be central to the illustrations. We will show you examples with small demonstrations so that you can choose what would suit your text best.
We will pay a lot of attention to the relationship between the text and the typographic illustration. You will look for coherence in composition, rhythm and meaning. A few weeks before the summer week, we will launch a thematic focus around which we will work together, with plenty of room for personal interpretation and approach.
The week will be supervised by Ruud Huysmans and Niels Goovaerts. We will guide you step by step, from idea and sketch to print, and we will support you both technically and in terms of content. There will be room to try things out, make adjustments and refine your work as you go along.
Both novice and more experienced typesetters are welcome during this five-day summer week. Based on your experience, you will be introduced to the art of typesetting and letterpress printing, or you can focus on finer details that you would like to learn.
At the end of the summer week, you will go home with a number of copies of your own printed work and that of the other participants.
Lunches
We look well after you during the week with fine vegetarian lunches and snacks. For those participants that wish to have dinner together we organise evening meals, the costs of these will be shared. Participants that camp will have to supply their own breakfast. A fridge is available to keep your foodstuff and a supermarket is in the vicinity.
Camping
During the summer week, camping is possible in the garden. Bring your own tent. Camping costs €5.00/night. There are sanitary facilities and you can take a shower in the house.

More about Ruud Huysmans
Ruud Huysmans is a graphic designer and letterpress printer with an interest in all forms of typography. After starting a letterpress printing business with a colleague under the name Nieuwe Hoogte in Rotterdam, he has been working under his own name for several years now in a workshop in Heerle, Brabant (the Netherlands).
As a printer, he has a strong preference for experimentation and technology. In his workshop, he explores the boundaries of design and text using analogue methods to arrive at new solutions in his work. The process is central to this: questioning everything and investigating what might be possible. His knowledge of materials, theory and history is essential to his letterpress experiments.
